For her doctoral dissertation, Malak Al-Rasheed (PhD ’04) personally surveyed an astonishing 683 civilian Kuwaiti women about the impact of war-zone trauma on their lives. So it’s probably not surprising that Al-Rasheed’s energy and commitment are already having a major impact on her country’s social work profession. An Assistant Professor in the Kuwait University Department of Sociology and Social Work, she played a key role in achieving accreditation for the social work program and for the other six programs in the College of Social Sciences. Since 2006, she’s headed the College’s newly created Academic Accreditation Office. A frequent guest speaker on Kuwait television and radio, Al-Rasheed also conducts community workshops and seminars. She received GSSW’s 2007 Robert L. Hawkins Social Work Achievement Award.
