Colleen “Co” Carew (MSW ’90), LCSW, is Chair of the Social Work Department at Salish Kootenai College (SKC), a tribally controlled college located on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Pablo, Montana, and chartered by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Hired to guide the development of the program because of her leadership skills, administrative abilities and extensive knowledge of Native American culture, Carew has worked with the faculty to define program goals and objectives and to develop course materials appropriate to the unique needs and resources of Native peoples. Their efforts have led to the inclusion of historical trauma in discussions of cultural experience, viewing culture as a resource for surviving and transcending this trauma, and incorporating culturally sensitive assignments and assessment tools into the SKC curriculum.
