Mary R. Lewis, MSW ’61

Reflecting on a career that combined clinical practice with teaching and international scholarship, Mary R. Lewis (MSW ’61), PhD, ACSW, feels fortunate to have earned her doctorate at a time when state and national politics favored progressive and creative approaches to mental health.  While her university teaching preferences tended toward policy and research methods, Lewis maintained a particular interest in children’s mental health, and she published widely on practice and policy issues around the world. Her 1996 book, Integrating Services for Children at Risk: Denmark, France, Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom (England and Wales), is available in both English and French. Named Professor Emerita at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work in 1980, Lewis subsequently served as Director of the University’s Children’s Health Access and Management Program until 1992.
