With a life-long passion for helping children, Ruth P. Arent (MSW ’51), MA, focused her distinguished international career on the youngest survivors of trauma. The author of numerous articles and ten widely read books on the subject, Arent also created a series of American Humane Society posters to help adults recognize signs of trauma in children. She volunteered in Latvia, Lithuania and several Russia orphanages when she was well into her 70s, and she was 83 when she wrote her most recent book, Helping Children Grieve. Three years earlier, she published a brightly illustrated book of poetry that spoke directly to young trauma victims, helping them, for example, understand the sometimes bewildering behavior of traumatized adults.
